Employees can now self-certify sickness absence for up to 28 days given new, temporary, rules introduced by the Government.
What does this change for employees?
Previously, employees needed to attend a GP for a “FIT Note” if they had been ill for more than 7 days, but the new rules which apply from 17 December 2021 through to 26 January 2022 provide that employees now only need to obtain a “FIT Note” if ill for more than 28 days.
This is intended as a short-term measure to support the COVID-19 vaccine booster programme by relieving the burden on GPs.
